The
Medical Service Plan of BC, (MSP),
provides
partial coverage for patients on premium assistance (individuals or
families who make less than $25,000 income per year). MSP allows
for a total of 10 treatments per year for any combination of therapy
from a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), Chiropractor,
Physiotherapist or Naturopath.
Extended medical and Private Insurance Plans
covers most massage therapy treatments, with a Registered massage
Therapist (RMT). Suggestion would be to call your employer or
insurer to confirm details.
ICBC
will
provide coverage for injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents.
Although, since March 01, 2002, their policies have changed becoming
more specific to the individual case. Suggestion would be to
contact myself, Kelly Pearce, or your ICBC adjuster for more
information.

Registered Massage Therapist:
Muscle Energy Techniques (METs) are manipulative treatment
procedures used in Osteopathic Medicine and Physical Therapy. These
techniques use a voluntary contraction of the patient's muscles against
a distinctly controlled counterforce applied by the clinician. The
contraction is executed from a precise position in a specific direction
to achieve a specific goal. METs may be used to correct a patient's
musculoskeletal alignment, increase the mobility of restricted joints to
improve motion, lengthen short muscles, strengthen weakened muscles, and
reduce localized swelling. Because the patient exerts muscular effort
during this process, these techniques are considered to be active
techniques.
Sports Massage
In Sports Massage I focus
on the athlete's needs and goals by understanding thorough education of
anatomy and physiology and the effects exercise has on them. There is
a growing appreciation of how massage can benefit the sports person and
become an integral part of the athlete's training program. Athlete's
who are improving their performance and increasing their competitive
edge do so by adopting a training schedule to enhance their skill,
strength, stamina, suppleness and speed. As the level of training
increases there is a gradual overuse of the body. The overuse can
create problems and imbalances in soft tissues. If ignored the
discomfort/pain can become chronic, the athletic performance will slow
or stop improvements. The athlete may also be susceptible to develop
more serious traumatic forms of injury.
Benefits of Sports Massage
- Massage, applied skillfully, is the most effective therapy for
releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal
system. Received regularly this may help athletes prevent injuries,
which might otherwise be caused by overuse. A constant build-up of
tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on
joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves.
These muscle imbalances may develop and
often go undiagnosed until they are serious enough to cause the athlete
discomfort or impede performance. The skilled massage therapist will be
able to detect variations in the soft tissues and by using the correct
techniques, help the sports person maintain a much healthier physical
state.
It may therefore be reasonably claimed
that one of the greatest benefits of sports massage is in helping
prevent injury.
Joint Mobilizations is a
manual therapy technique used to modulate pain and treat joint
dysfunctions that limit range of motion(ROM) by specifically addressing
the altered joint movements.
Factors that may alter joint
movements:
1. pain and muscle guarding
2. joint hypomobility
3. inflammation of the joint
4. tight/tense muscles or adhesions
in the joint capsules or supporting ligaments
5. malalignment or subluxation
of bony surfaces
Effects of Joint Mobilization
-stimulates the nerve responses to
DECREASE pain
-helps to ease muscles spasms and muscle
guarding
-increases the awareness of position and
motion of the joint involved
Nutritional Effects
-the therapist applies traction or small
gliding movements, which cause synovial fluid movement
(synovial fluid – fluid that provides
nutrition to the joint surfaces)
-movement can improve nutrient exchange due
to joint swelling and immobilization
Mechanical Effects (increases active
movement)
- improves mobility of hypomobile
joints
(hypomobile joints - adhesions and
thickened connective tissue from immobilization)
- maintains extensibility and
tensile strength of articular tissues
Definitions:
Mobilization/Manipulation
- the therapist applies passive
manual therapy technique to joints and related soft tissues @ varying
speeds and amplitudes using traction and small gliding and oscillating
movements.
Self Mobilization
- self – stretching technique that
specifically uses joint traction or glides that direct the stretch force
to the joint capsule
All motions are performed with Pain Free

Myofascial Release Therapy is a manual therapy technique, a
mixture of stretches and massage techniques. Myofascial release
therapy maneuvers the entire body and promotes healing and relieves
pain.
Derived from the Latin word myo –
meaning muscle and fascia – for band, myofascial release therapy
releases tension from the fibrous bands of connecting tissue (fascia).
The goals are to free the constrictions or blockages in the fascia,
therefore alleviating problems with the connective tissue scarring and
injury.
Myofascial Release Therapy helps the
individuals with poor posture, physical injury, illness and emotional
stress. By applying this technique the fascial network becomes freed
and tension on bones, muscles, joints and nerve is relieved.
Ultimately, myofascial release restores complete balance back to the
body.
Myofascial Release Therapy is a successful
technique to help in recovering in back pain, chronic fatigue, menstrual
problems, symptoms of frozen shoulder or chronic pain in and around
joints of the body, fibromyalgia, headaches, incontinence, tennis or
golfer's elbow, shin splints, sprains, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle
spasms, whiplash injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome.
Myofascial Release can be administered to
children suffering from birth trauma, head injuries, cerebral palsy and
scoliosis
